Data you need to know about YOU!!!!                                                                      By GWD

You know what your data says about YOU and what YOU can do to repair it and better prepare yourself for job interviews in an extremely tight job market?

There are many ways you can equip yourself with finding out what employers are looking for, what they use in their recruiting measures.   Listed are (5) approaches to think about when you are looking to get back into the workforce and being ready for the challenge.

1)       Did you know that employers utilize data such as criminal background checks, driving records, credit reports and drug tests when contemplating new hires?

It is in your best interest to request a copy of an annual credit report to review any blemishes that can be identified on your credit report.  Starting soon you can get your free credit score as per the recent reform act signed.  Also when you make it past the first round of the interview stage and the employer has identified he or she will be conducting a background check, criminal and credit report, this would be a good time to mention using this type of verbiage. ” Due to economic challenges and the time period for which I have been unemployed, my credit has suffered a bit”. This gives the employer a heads up that you have had some difficulties and given the opportunity this will be rectified without being caught off guard.

2)       What is also unknown is that everyday job seekers are being evaluated by potential employers. But it is no longer your knowledge, skills and abilities that determines if you will be moving forward in the interview process once you get through the doors.  Some companies are now assessing if you have had any accident claims.

It is my understanding there are very few employers that follow this approach however, be prepared to discuss a past incident or workers compensation issue.   Former employers are not allowed to reveal any negative and derogatory statement concerning the employee, however a questioned asked “Would you rehire this employee if give the chance based upon the response may be a means to determine your standing with the company.

3)       In addition, there is a silent trend that a number of employers only want to consider the current employed to fill their job openings.   Job seekers have so many obstacles to overcome to win reemployment that this is not what they need right now.

On your resume it identifies the dates of your past employer(s) and the period of time you were with the company (with your area of responsibilities and competencies.  (Chronological resume)  Yet if the past employer date identifies you have been out of work longer than a six month period without  a means of volunteering, charity work, disability, further education, etc, this can be a RED flag to the employer.  I would encourage you to find ways to fill in the gaps through community involvement, continuing education, temporary or part time status.

4)   A large percentage of employers over the past ten years have invested in an ATS.  An Applicant Tracking Systems is another device to track your  resume, review for buzz words and also determine your eligibility for a position. This type of system also allows employers to keep applications on file, where they can be easily retrieved.  This ATS enables the supervisor or manager to review these applicants via emailed directly from the internal recruiter.   There are many ATS systems such as:  www.Peopleclick which is compatible with People soft, a few free systems are www.hiringnation.com , www.pcrecruiter.net and many others.

Over time, the paper application has been phased out by employers and replaced by electronic applications (unless required in person). Sometimes they’re sorted and stored by sophisticated software ATS. This device is also use to support t their EEO/AAP report with respects to identifying their hiring pool and fair hiring practices.  Therefore there is no need to apply more than once every 90 days or so, and in many cases you won’t be able to.  I would however offer this advice to review the job description for the position carefully and as the requirements identify buzz words, utilize a number of these buzz words in your resume.    Always, always, do your homework and research on the company so you can ask questions pertinent to the company’s goals, mission and over all direction.

     5) Last but not least there are employers who work with verification check organization on ire Security Clearance -   These companies that want you will need a security clearance for most jobs.

It is in you best interest to do this before hand. A security clearance indicates to a company you have taken the initiative to cover all the bases on your credit, background on past or current employment  validation.   Here is a link of helpful information on the process. http://govcentral.monster.com/security-clearance-jobs/articles/413-how-to-obtain-a-security-clearance

There is additional information provided on www.whitehouse.gov that addresses the President’s stand on putting Americans Back to work as the HIRE Act:   The HIRE Act addresses  the  following :

Provide tax cuts for businesses that hire someone who has been out of work for at least 2 months
  • Help businesses to invest in their future by permitting them to write off investments in equipment this year
  • Encourage job creation by expanding investments in schools and clean energy projects
  • Maintain investments in roads and bridges
So finally, based upon this information which enables you know that certain data has an impact on your employment chances you should be ready and equipped.   You should also know that the federal government is working in your favor to get you back on track if you come equipped with the right skills, education, mindset and determination for the challenges that lie ahead.

7 Ways to Stop Wasting Your Money

Most of us are guilty of not keeping up with our expenditures (I’m guilty too) during our lifetimes. There're times when we hear the news and so bogged down with the negatives that when we get a chance to splurge we tend to spend on the wrong things.  Wasteful spending leads to some serious bad habits unless you just don’t care.   Yet, if you just don’t care that can be okay for the moment but it can come back to bite you in the long run.  Sure, looking good and keeping a budget can be tough habits to maintain, but I want to encourage you to avoid these seven wasteful spending attractions and save some for your self.

1)  Smoking -   I know it’s hard and in most cases addictive, with the price of cigarettes going up every few years.  It ‘s time to put the but out and find another choice, if you are a creature of habit and when you have a drink and cup of coffee or just need to take a break from some of the stresses in life, there are alternatives.  Such as carrots, celery, venting via writing, walking and or running or listening to music via your mp3, ipod or more.   Nonetheless, this can be a very costly habit.  Let’s calculate if you smoke one - two packs per day in the State of NY @ $11.00 per pack equals $4,015- $8,030, this is enough money to pay off a bill or payment on a car or a down payment for a condo.

2)  Nail Salons - Once you start it is hard to go back.  I know all of us want our feet or nails to look good but the time, hours spent in a nail salon can be wasted.  There are even cases on the news that state that a number of these places are not as sanitary as you think.  Okay, yes I am a victim too and needed to look at the $ and say to myself “my goodness is this how much I spent”.  Over the years you can (if every two weeks or once a month) spend anywhere from $672 to $900 a year on these visits.

3) Coffee -  The breakfast addiction -  Whether it is Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts  ( all over .99 cents) these breakfast  “don’t talk to me until I have my first cup” or “gotta have it “ can become very costly.   Just one cup in the morning to jump starts your day or to settle you throughout the day can raise the temperature on you spending.   Once switching from tea to coffee, I stop in the my local supermarket  and purchased a jar of instant coffee so I can boil my water while getting ready in the morning, make my coffee and then pour it into a thermos.  And there should be plenty of thermoses around from the various trade shows and give aways companies hand out.   So if you must “don’t leave home without it, carry it with you and your pockets will love you for it.

4) Eating on the Run - How many times we have to work on a project, just want to finish and the time ran over to find the lunch room is closed.  Now you have to purchase an item from the vending machine or you run out to a fast food restaurant.   Your craving is satisfied but you spent money that was not anticipated.  This can happen more often than few and if you are on a budget like most can interrupt your flow.  Why not take an apple, yogurt, some other fruit or pack a lunch you will find that helps you to relieve the pressure and keeps you focused.

5) Paying your bills on line- You would be surprised as to how much money you can save by billing paying on line.   Even though you might be leery of the security, 90% of the companies who accept bill paying online are working hard to secure your security.  Bill paying online can save you an average of $300 – $500 a year.  Not to mention you save on postage or driving to the particular store or even incurring late charges by the delay of not paying on time.

6)  Shopping while you are hungry -   If your plans to shop after work or at a set time be flexible.  If you shop when you are hungry it encourages you to purchase more items than you need and fills your cart and reduces your budget.  Try to be flexible an alternative is shopping after dinner and a time when less people are in the store.  You might even want to take a bottle of water, juice or fruit with you while walking through the aisles.  Know your budget and try to calculate or add in your head the items placed in your cart.   You will find that when utilizing these few tips will help you to stay on course.

7) Gym /Fitness Memberships - We all want to look our very best and everyone joins a fitness center for various reasons such as: reduce stress, keeping you fit, meeting the opposite sex, network and maintaining a look for the ultimate next job interview.   Well you don’t have to spend allot to look good, over the counter products are just as good than spending on infomercial product you read and hear.  Walking in your own local parks and communities keeps you fit a mile or three once a week. Walk to the store or walking your child to school instead of driving your car (it helps you to bond with the child (ren) as well.  Drink plenty of water or cranberry juice which also helps you to flush your kidneys and rids your body of toxins.  This time of the year watermelon is also a great fruit to help you to stay fit and cleanse.

Finally economist, state that when you carry more singles in your pocket (book) or wallet, you tend to spend a dollar than to break a $10 or $20 bill. When you carry large bills in your pocket your mindset is that you will want to hold on to it longer.

So the next time you think about spending on any of these products or ideas remember you have alternatives and spend wisely.

Tired of the waiting for opportunities stemming from the online job boards, unemployment claim coming close to an end, trying to make connections or the networking scene, well you should know you have options. Don’t hover over your computer to see if a response to your resume just came through, with the average unemployment percentage reaching approximately 9.7 percent, there’re alternatives and you can work from home.  Whether you are in a remote area, or can no longer afford the commute, listed are (12) twelve jobs that won’t hurt your pocket with too much of a sacrifice.  In most cases all you need is a phone (magic jack/ internal or dedicated line), fax machine or efax, and access to the internet.
